Cookies: »Accept all«?

All or nothing with the toujou cookie consent

Consent forms for the use of cookies were very simple in toujou so far. There was one pop up, three checkboxes with the corresponding preselection of the respective website and an OK button. But since the beginning of 2022, toujou websites offer »settings« or »accept all« buttons – does this mean that data protection at toujou is now being trampled all over?

No hassle

First, let's be honest: agreeing to the use of cookies is the first negative experience for many website visitors when visiting your website. The majority of users always click on »OK« or »accept all« to close the dialog box and go furtheron. Those who are actually interested in the use of third-party content and cookies will usually – and now also in toujou – find what they are looking for via the »settings« button. Following this button you will find the familiar simple settings and an »OK« button to confirm the settings.

The reason for the change

The Telecommunications Telemedia Data Protection Act (TTDSG) in Germany »standardizes the previous case law of the Europaen Concil of Justice (ECJ) and Bundesgerichtshof (BGH) and clarifies (...) that cookies (...) require informed, explicit and prior consent (consent). This applies (...) regardless of whether personal data is involved.« Same regulations have been or should follow in other european countries according to the ECJ law.

Basically, this means that any form of cookies or, in most cases, third-party content is no longer permitted. Of course, the configuration options in toujou will be remained. By consistently implementating the above law, however, you will deactivate all preferences to give your visitors the choice – as described above, most users nevertheless click on »OK«.

For website operators, however, this rigorous interpretation is not »OK« in most cases. With toujou we are not talking about the loss of advertisers or the loss of user data. Most operators are simply interested in assessing whether a website is worth the effort (page statistics) or in the user-friendliness of the page (e.g. YouTube videos are displayed directly).

Show goodwill with corporate websites: An example

Maybe your overworked craftsman has set up an emergency form on his website to serve you. He wants to use it to work faster and better for his customers and as well have less organization to be done after a hard working day. Sounds good, but not so important to you? Then please don't get annoyed if he has to take phone calls while working on your heating system.

An online form makes the structured clarification of basic questions possible and – once received as an email – takes much less time than any phone call. But what if the form is hardly used? In this case, your craftsman will be pleased to get simple analyses of usage behavior. Is the form started and not sent? Is there one step too much to do for users? Visiting statistics provides insightful information and helps making websites better – and that's what we're here for, right?

Unacceptable for your visitors?

The toujou cookie consent management provides a clear and simple structure. In a maximum of two steps, your visitors have agreed to the use of cookies or denied it. But what if you don't want to get them to agree via »Accept all«?

In this case, you deactivate all preferences and hide the cookie notice for everyone. Your visitors will then be able to enjoy a website without a cookie notice and the internet will once again become a little less frustrating. Do you lose statistics? No more than if you hope for the active consent of the users. With the TTDSG it is really all or nothing - for your visitors it is always »OK«.
